While Russia has reduced it’s emissions through energy savings by 35% in recent years, Russia successful doubled their GDP. Thus, demonstrating that economic development still can take place, while protecting the environment at the same time.

It is of importance for Russia that the new UNCCC agreement results in a legal binding agreement, involving developing nations.

Vladimir Putin announced emissions reductions by 70% until 2030, based on Russia’s 1990 levels. Energy conservation and new technologies should help with this effort. Additional, forests should play a major role in the absorption of greenhouse gases. Additional Russia offers assistance through UN lead programs for developing countries to reach their emissions goals.

Russia also wants to establish a scientific forum under the guidance of the UN to bolster a comprehensive climate effort.
