Over Europe, a steady high-pressure system is developing. Because the structure resembles the Greek letter Omega on weather maps, this large-scale weather pattern is referred to as a “Omega block” or “Omega pattern.” The heat has come and won’t go away. The north may experience a small improvement in weather, but starting in the middle of the week, the heat will return everywhere.

Germany

There will be some respite at the beginning of the week, with temperatures between 20 and 26°C, particularly close to the seaside. People will be sweating in humid weather in other parts of the country, with temperatures as high as 30°C; in the Upper Rhine region, they may even reach 35°C. Even in the morning, the air will seem stuffy and there won’t be much cooling off at night.

Although the overall probability of storms is lower than it was over the weekend, isolated heat-induced thunderstorms will pass through, especially in the south. The sun will be shining all day for a lot of people.

The heat is predicted to return to the north by the middle of the week. Widespread severe heat of 35°C or more is therefore predicted.

This following weekend, temperatures may even reach 40°C, depending on the weather forecasts. Over the weekend, storms followed high temperatures in Germany’s south, resulting in numerous injuries from lightning strikes.

France

Alcohol drinking is prohibited during the yearly Fête de la Musique (Music Day) celebration in Paris, where Sunday temperatures are predicted to hit 35°. It is expected to reach 40°C in certain parts of southern France and Spain.

The mayor of Paris, Emmanuel Grégoire, declared that swimming will be permitted in Canal Saint-Martin. In order to assist those seeking a place to cool off, he has also given the go-ahead for Paris’s parks and gardens to be open around-the-clock.

Spain

The Spanish national weather agency, AEMET, has issued a warning about “extremely high nocturnal and daytime temperatures” that are not expected to decrease until next Thursday.

According to the organization, anyone engaging in outdoor activities and those who are susceptible will be in “severe danger” due to the inclement weather. It also stated that there is a higher chance of fires. Highs of about 40°C are possible in several parts of the Madrid region.

Switzerland

According to MeteoSwiss, the Federal Office for Meteorology and Climatology, temperatures in Sion, in the southwest of Switzerland, are predicted to reach a high of 37°C on Sunday. Basel may see temperatures as high as 35°C, while Zurich, Geneva, and Bern are expected to reach 34°C.

Italy

On Sunday, temperatures in Rome and Turin, Italy, are predicted to reach 36°C.

UK

An amber weather warning for excessive heat has been issued by the UK’s Met Office for areas of Wales and England, effective Monday.

It warned of the “increased likelihood of water safety issues” and stated that “adverse health impacts” were likely.

Today is the summer solstice, when the sun is at its highest. Until at least the beginning of the month, a cooling trend is not anticipated.
