Electric Cars Achieve Historic Milestone in Germany
Pure electric vehicles were registered more frequently than any other powertrain type for the first time in June 2026, marking a significant shift in Germany‘s automotive market. According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), 84,057 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were registered in June 2026, representing 28.4% of the market—a remarkable 78.2% increase compared to June 2025.
This milestone came alongside a strong overall market performance, with 296,378 cars registered in June 2026, up 15.7% year-over-year. Electric vehicles narrowly surpassed hybrid cars, which claimed 83,315 registrations. Petrol vehicles followed with 60,796 registrations, diesel with 33,862, and plug-in hybrids trailing at 32,212. In the first half of 2026, EV registrations surged 48% to approximately 370,000 vehicles, while petrol car registrations declined by 18.2% and diesel by 8.6%.
Industry experts attribute this growth to rising fuel prices and government purchase incentives. According to Sascha Bürger, sales director at Amelung car dealership, approximately 70% of private customers now choose fully electric vehicles, comparing lifecycle costs between conventional and electric powertrains.
Chinese manufacturer BYD experienced extraordinary growth, quadrupling its sales to 26,000 vehicles in the first half of 2026, making it the only Chinese brand in Germany’s top 15 manufacturers. This growth raised concerns among industry experts about competition from affordable Chinese electric vehicles in lower price segments.
Volkswagen maintains market leadership with 17.2% share, followed by BMW (8.8%) and Škoda (8.4%). The average CO2 emissions of newly registered vehicles dropped to 92.6 grams per kilometer in June 2026, a 13.6% reduction year-over-year.
However, significant challenges remain. Battery costs, comprising approximately 40% of vehicle expenses, continue limiting affordable options, particularly in the under-€20,000 segment. Nevertheless, the used electric vehicle market is expanding rapidly, with dealer inventories depleting due to strong demand for lease returns and used EVs.
Despite these positive trends, electric vehicles represent only 4.1% of Germany’s total registered car fleet as of end-2025, indicating substantial growth potential ahead.
