With outside temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius, more and more people are turning to this inexpensive and clever trick to protect their homes from unbearable heat.

An emergency blanket is a remarkable piece of medical equipment that should not be missing from any first aid kit. Despite its minimal weight and paper-thin construction, this inconspicuous foil is actually a lifesaver – both in cases of hypothermia and dangerous overheating.

The secret lies in its special construction: The metallized plastic foil does not function like conventional heat insulation that stores warmth through thick materials. Instead, it operates on the reflection principle. The thin aluminum layer simply reflects heat radiation back, similar to how a mirror reflects light. In an emergency, the blanket either prevents a patient from losing body heat or protects them from dangerous overheating from outside.

It actually works – and the physics behind it are straightforward: If approximately 70-80% of heat radiation is already reflected at the window before it enters the room, the interior temperature drops noticeably. For people living in attic apartments or poorly insulated rooms, an improvised heat shield made from emergency blankets can make a significant difference. However, there are important points to consider when attaching the foil:

• External installation is mandatory: The emergency blanket must be attached to the outside of the window – not the inside. Inside placement creates heat buildup, which is counterproductive

Improved air circulation: During cooler mornings and evenings, intensive ventilation should occur. With fan use, cool air can be pumped into the room and warm air expelled. External greenery through climbing plants offers natural sun protection and looks more appealing.

The increasing demand for emergency blankets as heat protection is a symptomatic sign of a larger trend: with increasingly frequent and intense heat waves, people are searching for quick, affordable solutions. This is understandable but also reveals a structural problem.

In the long term, it makes sense to consider permanent solutions – whether through investments in better insulation or installation of professional heat protection systems. This not only contributes to personal well-being but can also save energy costs and reduce heat stress.

Emergency blankets are indeed effective in combating summer heat – and the increased demand in pharmacies is justified. For short-term solutions, camping, or people on a tight budget, this trick is practical and recommended.

However, one should be aware that this is an improvised emergency measure, not an elegantly designed long-term solution. Those who must cope with increasingly frequent phases of intense heat should also explore professional alternatives in parallel.

For the current high summer with temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius, the recommendation remains: grab one or more emergency blankets from the pharmacy, tape them to the windows – and hope that the next cool autumn doesn’t take too long to arrive.
