Data Centers Face Growing Climate Risks, Study Warns Industry
A sweeping new climate risk analysis reveals that nearly 80% of the world’s data center capacity faces elevated danger from acute climate hazards such as flooding, extreme winds, and wildfires that threaten to disrupt operations and inflate costs.
Research by First Street, a leading climate risk analytics firm, examined 97 global data center markets and discovered that these facilities operate in increasingly precarious environmental conditions.
More than half of all data centers are also exposed to chronic climate stress from extreme heat and drought, which diminishes energy efficiency and drives up operating expenses over time.
The analysis exposes a troubling reality in the industry: most investors still depend on outdated, historically-based models that fail to capture how climate change is intensifying weather patterns, precipitation extremes, and temperature volatility.
Given that data centers typically remain operational for 20 to 30 years, ignoring long-term climate impacts creates substantial financial risk that markets have not yet fully priced in.
The Asia-Pacific region faces the highest climate vulnerability at 89%, compared to 50% in the Americas and 46% in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
Paradoxically, some of the fastest-growing data center markets—including Northern Virginia, Malaysia’s Johor region, and Marseille, France—rank among the most climate-exposed locations globally.
Despite these challenges, forward-thinking developers like Digital Realty are pioneering climate-resilient solutions, including waterless cooling systems and closed-loop water infrastructure to shield facilities from environmental risks.
Experts stress that the industry must move beyond assessing individual buildings and instead adopt broader systems-level thinking that considers power infrastructure, water access, and community vulnerabilities.
The findings underscore an urgent need for the data center industry to integrate climate science into site selection, design, and long-term planning strategies.
